Alternative Break experiences at Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center are open to college students and other young adults who are seeking a meaningful and restorative retreat from their daily routine.

Offered throughout the month of March (and again in the fall) in weekly sessions for 6 nights/7 days (Saturday – Friday), our Alternative Break Sessions are an opportunity for young adults to spend the week with others who are interested in exploring sustainable living.

Participants will stay in Narrow Ridge’s solar powered Strawbale Lodge and will receive delicious vegetarian meals.


Activities include

  • service-learning projects such as organic gardening, trail work, creek cleanup, possible natural building projects
  • orientation to the community and work of Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center
  • tour of eco-homes and facilities
  • visit Memorial Wildflower Garden, Meditation Labyrinth and Natural Burial Preserve
  • organic gardening
  • day hikes and night hikes
  • star gazing 
  • alone time in the beautiful outdoors
  • stories and songs around a campfire
  • yoga
  • drum circle
  • discussions about important environmental topics aided at times by documentary films

Cost

The fee for this weeklong program is offered on a sliding scale of $250 – $600 per person (lodging and meals included) with financial assistance provided through the Bill Nickle Scholarship Fund. Lower fees may be accepted in special circumstances.
